IPhone Tops Mobile Ad Traffic

Author: Khate // Category: , ,

The iPhone 3G has become the top device worldwide for mobile ad traffic, according to the latest mobile metrics report from AdMob.

The company offers banner and text ads to mobile devices, and it said requests from the iPhone IPhone Tops Mobile Ad Traffic have jumped from 28 million in July to 236 million in October. Overall, Apple's handset was responsible for 4.1% of the company's monthly ad requests.

The vast majority of these ad requests come from iPhone users in the United States, where the handset still trails Motorola (NYSE: MOT)'s Razr. This data is solely based on AdMob's network, so it does not offer a comprehensive view of the entire market. But it does suggest that iPhone users are more likely to use their handsets for mobile Web browsing than other users are.

Outside of the United States, handsets from Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and Motorola dominate AdMob's charts. Handsets like Nokia's N70 and Motorola's Razr and Krzr are consistently used to access the mobile Web, according to the company's report.

As more and more customers purchase smartphones and mobile browsers get better, the market for mobile advertising is expected to swell in the next few years. Tevenue is projected to grow from $1.4 billion in 2007 to $10 billion by 2013. But the looming economic recession has some analysts predicting that advertising will be down in general, and the mobile ad market may be hit hardest.

But AdMob remains confident it can thrive, and the company served more than 5 billion ads in October. The advertising network continues to court high-profile clients, and it serves ads from more than 6,000 customers including Comedy Central, Cover Girl, Ford, Land Rover, and Toshiba.

Game roundup: Frenzic and Cube arrive at the App Store

Author: Khate // Category: , , ,

.
Posted Wed, Nov 19, 2008 4:00 PM by Sam Gwilym
Today there are two notable entries in games section of the App store, with the first of them being Frenzic ($4.99, App Store), by the Iconfactory. Frenzic, originally released for OS X, is a game that supposedly "makes Tetris and Bejeweled look like child's play".

Frenzic

Frenzic is noted for its highly addictive gameplay, which has you filling up empty circles with coloured pie pieces, with fully filled pies giving extra lives and points - and failure to fill empty circles costing you precious lives.

The online component to the game allows you to add friends, track stats, and look at high scores (with the added bonus of being able to compare high scores to people in your area using Location Services).Frenzic also has all the visual polish that the Iconfactory usually lavishes on its Apps, giving the game a consistently professional feel.

Frenzic

Cube

The other big release today was Cube (Free, App Store), by fernLighting. Cube is a first person shooter that features single and multiplayer and "fast oldskool gameplay". Cube is an open source effort, built on an entirely new and apparently unconventional engine, which features "very high precision dynamic occlusion culling with a form of geometric mipmapping on the whole world for dynamic LOD for configurable fps & graphic detail". Right on.

Frenzic

According to the developer, the game has had no features removed for the iPhone, keeping features such as in-game editing, cooperative editing, and demo recording, though they mention that some of these features are entirely impractical on the iPhone.

Having tried it, we can say it's quite impressive technically - it looks very good for a 3D game on the iPhone and has an acceptable framerate. However, there are big problems with the interface and controls, which cannot be reconfigured, the tiny menus, and the slightly grating music that you cannot seem to turn off. The most frustrating part is that its clear to see that if the interface was redone, there would be a really good multiplayer FPS for the iPhone existing this very moment. That day is sure to come, but not just yet.

FlightTrack tracks flights on your iPhone

Author: Khate // Category: , , ,

.

If you're the sort of person who spends a lot of time in airports, or have any loved ones consistently up in the air, FlightTrack ($4.99, App Store) by Ben Kazez may be the App for you. FlightTrack allows you to view real-time flight tracking maps, featuring routes, positions, weather and more.

FlightTrack gets its data from FlightView, a source which the US government and some of the world's largest airlines use for keeping tabs on airspace.

Using this wealth of data, it's possible to keep track of multiple flights, using flight numbers for reference, allowing you to see in-depth details about a flight (speed and altitude, for instance).

Currently FlightTrack is only able to track flights within the U.S., including inbound and outbound international flights, but the developer hints at this changing in future updates, along with information on Baggage Claim and Departure Gates.

Chess with Friends now a global, free iPhone app

Author: Khate // Category: , ,

Posted Tue, Nov 18, 2008 1:00 PM by Sam Gwilym
We recently wrote about the release of Chess with Friends (App Store, Free), a game which allows you to play Chess against anybody on your contact list, allowing you to make moves whenever it suits you.

When Chess with Friends was first released, it was only available in a handful of countries, due to Newtoy's servers only being able to handle contacts with 10-digit phonenumbers. As of this morning, however, Chess with Friends was added to all iTunes regions.

That's not all, though - Newtoy has also stated that they are changing the price of their Chess app from $4.99 to free, a move they say was motivated by seeing "the excitement that [their] '1000 free download' offer generated", preferring to "set the world on fire" before making a quick buck.

We've also had the chance to finally try out Chess with Friends myself, now that it's available to the world at large, and have been having a good time playing chess with the creators of Chess with Friends themselves. We were pleased to see that signing up was a fairly painless process, involving only putting in the details that you'd like to use to log in. One validation email later and we were good to go.

Inviting friends who don't yet have Chess for Friends creates a quick invite email for you, and now that the app itself is free we can't really imagine people are going to have much of an issue with downloading it and giving it a go. The option to go against a random opponent works well, and fortunately doesn't conceal the username of your opponent (you never know). There's also the Pass and Play move for those with more local friends, which works exactly how you'd expect it to.

The Games with Friends screen shows all of your Chess games, past and present, separated respectively by Your Move, Their Move, and Game Over. You can easily see what colour your pieces are from a quick glance, and you can also see when your opponent is actively looking at the game in play, signified by a pair of googley eyes.

Chess playing itself is simple, allowing you to move about pieces with a touch, and only making a move when you submit it, meaning you can't make a horrible mistake by mistouching. Captured pieces line the bottom of the board, and you can easily flick through past moves using a toggle at the bottom of the screen.

All in all, Chess for Friends is easily the most accessible and elegant form of Chess for the iPhone available, and it's now free. Yes please.

Adobe and ARM partner to optimize Flash for ARM powered devices

Author: Khate // Category: , , ,

.

iPhone 3GAdobe and ARM have announced they are working together to optimize Flash Player 10 and Adobe AIR to run on ARM powered devices.

Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) and ARM [(LSE:ARM); (Nasdaq:ARMH)] today announced a technology collaboration to optimize and enable Adobe® Flash® Player 10 and Adobe AIR™ for ARM Powered® devices, ranging from mobile phones to set-top boxes, mobile Internet devices, televisions, automotive platforms, personal media players and other mobile computing devices. The collaboration is expected to accelerate mobile graphics and video capabilities on ARM platforms to bring rich Internet applications and Web services to mobile devices and consumer electronics worldwide.

This is extremely interesting, because the iPhone is powered by the ARM11 processor. Steve Jobs previously claimed the iPhone is not capable of running a full version of flash. It is possible, though, that the version Adobe and ARM release may be stripped down or more lightweight.

Not only would this enable support for the iPhone, it could also enable support for other ARM powered devices such as BlackBerrys, which would be another big market for Adobe.

The other big component of this is Adobe AIR support on these devices, which would allow developers a near one click solution for creating iPhone applications from existing Adobe AIR based applications.

iPhone i.TV app provides TV, Movie listings and Netflix management on the go

iPhone i.TV app provides TV, Movie listings and Netflix management on the goIf you can’t get enough of your favorite TV shoes and movies, and you’ve got an iPhone or iPod Touch, then you might want to check out the i.TV app. It’s free to download and no jailbreak is required. It allows you to view TV and movie schedules, and if you’ve got a Netflix account, also gives you the ability to view detailed information about shows such ratings, cast credits, recommendations and you can likewise manage your queue list. Of course, these services will only come in handy for those residing in the US, but among the other free Netflix management apps available today, the i.TV app is the most diverse one in the bunch as it provides more than just Netflix services. I wonder though when a free global movie listing app will become available. Now that’s one app I sure wouldn’t hesitate to download.

Google Is Taking Questions (Spoken, via iPhone)

Author: Khate // Category: , , , ,

.

SAN FRANCISCO — Pushing ahead in the decades-long effort to get computers to understand human speech, Google researchers have added sophisticated voice recognition technology to the company’s search software for the Apple iPhone.

Users of the free application, which Apple is expected to make available as soon as Friday through its iTunes store, can place the phone to their ear and ask virtually any question, like “Where’s the nearest Starbucks?” or “How tall is Mount Everest?” The sound is converted to a digital file and sent to Google’s servers, which try to determine the words spoken and pass them along to the Google search engine.

The search results, which may be displayed in just seconds on a fast wireless network, will at times include local information, taking advantage of iPhone features that let it determine its location.

The ability to recognize just about any phrase from any person has long been the supreme goal of artificial intelligence researchers looking for ways to make man-machine interactions more natural. Systems that can do this have recently started making their way into commercial products.

Both Yahoo and Microsoft already offer voice services for cellphones. The Microsoft Tell me service returns information in specific categories like directions, maps and movies. Yahoo’s oneSearch with Voice is more flexible but does not appear to be as accurate as Google’s offering. The Google system is far from perfect, and it can return queries that appear as gibberish. Google executives declined to estimate how often the service gets it right, but they said they believed it was easily accurate enough to be useful to people who wanted to avoid tapping out their queries on the iPhone’s touch-screen keyboard.

The service can be used to get restaurant recommendations and driving directions, look up contacts in the iPhone’s address book or just settle arguments in bars. The query “What is the best pizza restaurant in Noe Valley?” returns a list of three restaurants in that San Francisco neighborhood, each with starred reviews from Google users and links to click for phone numbers and directions.

Raj Reddy, an artificial intelligence researcher at Carnegie Mellon University who has done pioneering work in voice recognition, said Google’s advantage in this field was the ability to store and analyze vast amounts of data. “Whatever they introduce now, it will greatly increase in accuracy in three or six months,” he said.

“It’s important to understand that machine recognition will never be perfect,” Mr. Reddy added. “The question is, How close can they come to human performance?” For Google the technology is critical to its next assault on the world of advertising. Google executives said location-based queries would make it possible to charge higher rates for advertisements from nearby businesses, for example, although it is not selling such ads now.

As with other Google products the service is freely available to consumers, and the company plans to eventually make it available for phones other than the iPhone.

“We are dramatically increasing value to the advertiser through location and voice,” said Vic Gundotra, a former Microsoft executive who now heads Google’s mobile businesses.

Google is by no means the only company working toward more advanced speech recognition capabilities. So-called voice response technology is now routinely used in telephone answering systems and in other consumer services and products. These systems, however, often have trouble with the complexities of free-form language and usually offer only a limited range of responses to queries.

Several weeks ago Adobe added voice recognition technology developed by Autonomy, a British firm, to its Creative Suite software, allowing it to generate transcripts of video and audio recordings with a high degree of accuracy.

Mr. Gundotra said Google had been tackling the twin problems of entering and retrieving information with hand-held wireless devices.

“Solving those two problems in a world-class way is our goal,” he said.

The new iPhone search capability is not the first speech offering from Google. In March, it announced that GOOG-411, an experimental directory information service, had turned into a real product. The service allows users to ask for business phone and address information. The company said it had built on its experience and the data it collected through GOOG-411 in developing the iPhone service.

The new service is an example of the way Google tries to blend basic computer science research with product engineering. The company has hired many of the best speech recognition researchers in the world and now has teams working on different aspects of the problem in New York, London and its headquarters in Mountain View, Calif.

An intriguing part of the overall design of the service was contributed by a Google researcher in London, who found a way to use the iPhone accelerometer — the device that senses how the phone is held — to set the software to “listen” mode when the phone is raised to the user’s ear.

Google researchers said that another of its advantages over competitors was the billions of queries its users have made over the years.

“One thing that has changed is the amount of computation and the amount of data that is available,” said Mike Cohen, a speech research who was co-founder of Nuance Communications before coming to Google.

Past queries can be used to build a statistical model of the way words are frequently strung together, Mr. Cohen said. This is just one of the components of the speech recognition system, which also includes a sound analysis model and a mechanism for linking the basic components of language to actual words.

Google recently published a technical paper on building large models for machine translation of language. The researchers wrote that they had trained the system on two trillion “tokens,” or words.
